Antardasha Explained: The Sub-Period That Decides Exact Event Timing

People often tell me their Mahadasha with great confidence and then ask why nothing has happened. The answer is almost always the same: the Mahadasha sets the theme, but the antardasha decides the event.

The structure in plain language

The Vimshottari system divides life into Mahadashas — long planetary periods ranging from six to twenty years. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, in the same planetary order, proportional to each planet's length. Each antardasha is divided further into pratyantardashas, which run for weeks or a few months.

So the reading works like a zoom lens:

• Mahadasha → the chapter of life
• Antardasha → the year the event lands
• Pratyantardasha → the month it becomes visible

How to find a marriage window

A marriage happens when the dasha lords touch the marriage part of the chart. Practically, I look for an antardasha lord that is one of these:

1. The 7th lord, or a planet placed in the 7th house.
2. Venus, or Jupiter for a woman's chart.
3. A planet in a sign owned by the 7th lord, or connected to it by aspect or exchange.
4. A planet that is the Darakaraka in Jaimini terms.
5. A planet placed in the 2nd or 11th house — family expansion and gains through relationships.

When the Mahadasha lord and the antardasha lord both point at the 7th house, the probability is very high. When only one does, the event usually needs a supporting transit.

The transit confirmation

Dasha shows readiness; transit pulls the trigger. Two checks I always run:

• Jupiter transiting the 7th house, the 7th from the Moon, or aspecting the Lagna or the 7th lord.
• Saturn transiting the 7th house or the 7th lord in a supportive way, giving permanence.

When a favourable antardasha coincides with a Jupiter transit over the 7th, that is the month families should be looking at.

Why the same antardasha behaves differently for two people

Because the planet's own condition differs. A Mercury antardasha with Mercury exalted in the 7th house delivers an engagement. The same Mercury antardasha with Mercury debilitated in the 12th delivers a confusing situationship. The dasha is the calendar; the birth chart decides the content.

A common mistake

Many people read only the Mahadasha lord and ignore the placement of the antardasha lord from the Mahadasha lord. If the antardasha lord sits 6th, 8th or 12th from the Mahadasha lord, the period tends to bring obstruction rather than fulfilment, even for otherwise good planets. This one check corrects more wrong predictions than any other.

Using this practically

If a family is choosing between two possible marriage years, I map the antardasha sequence for both charts, mark the overlapping favourable windows, and then look for muhurats inside those windows. That is how a general prediction becomes an actual date.
