Saptamsha (D7) Chart: Reading Children and Progeny in the Kundli

Very few questions come to me with as much emotion behind them as the question about children. Couples sit in front of me with reports, dates and hope, and they want one honest answer. In Vedic astrology, that answer is not read from the birth chart alone — it is read from the Saptamsha (D7) chart.

What is the Saptamsha chart?

The Saptamsha is a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into seven parts. Each part becomes a full sign of its own, and from those parts a second chart is drawn. Where the birth chart shows the promise, the D7 shows the detail — children, progeny, and the continuity of a family line.

I always tell people this: the 5th house of your main kundli is the doorway. The D7 is the room behind it.

What do astrologers actually look at in the D7?

In my practice I begin with three things.

• The lagna of the D7 and its lord — the general condition of progeny in the chart.
• The 5th house of the D7 and the planets that touch it.
• Jupiter, the natural karaka of children, and its dignity in both charts.

When Jupiter is strong in the birth chart but afflicted in the D7, the promise exists but the path takes longer. When both charts agree, the reading becomes far more confident.

Can the D7 tell me the number of children or their gender?

No, and I will not pretend otherwise. Classical texts speak in tendencies, not counts. Anyone giving you an exact number and gender is guessing with a straight face.

What the D7 does indicate well is timing and ease — whether children come early or after effort, whether medical support is likely to be part of the story, and which dasha periods open the window. That is genuinely useful. A false number is not.

What if the D7 looks difficult?

A difficult D7 is not a verdict. I have often seen charts where the 5th house of the D7 carried heavy malefic influence, and the couple still had a child during a supportive Jupiter or Moon period — with medical care working alongside remedies, not instead of them.

Remedies in these cases are simple and traditional: strengthening Jupiter, Santan Gopal upasana, honest charity, and patience through the wrong dasha. No astrologer should ever ask you to stop treatment.
